What is a CBE?

A Competency Based Exam (CBE) is a form of alternative credit offered to expedite your undergraduate degree. This alternative allows you to test out of a class and earn credit by taking an exam. Registration into a CBE grants access to a self-directed study environment in which you can prepare for the exam with a pre-test, readings, module content, mastery exercises, and practice questions.

You will be responsible for learning the material on your own so we strongly encourage you to follow the schedule laid out in the CBE syllabus, purchase the suggested textbook, and complete all of the readings and practice questions.

When you are ready to take the exam, you pay the exam fee ($250 for a 3 credit CBE) and schedule a virtual proctored exam using your web camera on your computer. We generally recommend that you attempt a CBE for a topic in which you are already familiar. CBE's should not generally be used if you have no prior knowledge of the topic.

You get two chances to receive a grade of 70% or more on the exam, which will be added to your student account as transfer credit. If you do not pass the CBE after 2 attempts then you will need to take the actual course instead.
