The Department of Education uses the FAFSA to determine the total amount of Pell Grant a student can be awarded in a fiscal year. Each fiscal year runs from July 1 – June 30. Once Pell Grant eligibility has been determined for the fiscal year the amount that you can receive in a term is determined by the number of credit hours taken in that term. Once you receive all of the Pell Grant you are able to receive for the fiscal year, you cannot receive any more.
Unfortunately, some students—often students who attend full-time in the Fall and Winter—will use all of their Pell grant in the Fall and Winter trimesters and, therefore, don’t have any more Pell eligibility in the Spring. Once the new fiscal year starts, you may be eligible for more Pell Grant.
